What is FIRST?
FIRST stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. The mission of FIRST is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and foster well-rounded life capabilities including self- confidence, communication and leadership. FRC stands for FIRST Robotics Challenge. FRC is designed for high school students who want to compete head-to-head using a sports model. Teams are responsible for designing, building and programming a robot to compete in an alliance format against other teams.
What is team #5501?
Team #5501 formed in 2015. During our 2017 season, we took home a victory from the LSSU competition in Sault Ste. Marie MI. We are increasing our member numbers each year. We hope to bring home more banners this upcoming season.
Coaches and Mentors
Coaches Jen and Troy Sutton are both teachers in the Burr Oak School District. Jen teaches the high school Science and Spanish classes.She has been in the school district for 9 years and enjoys her students. When she is not teaching or busy with the robotics team, she enjoys spending time with family and friends. Troy teaches middle school history and social studies. Troy has been in the school district for 7 years. Troy is our teams coding coach and we can depend on him whenever we have coding questions or issues. He enjoys Michigan State sports and watching the good ol' Detroit Tigers.
Chris Herrmann is a lead mentor for #5501. His numerous fundraising efforts in the preseason are greatly appreciated. His skills and knowledge are a wonderful asset to this team. Chris is the high school math teacher in our school district. He has been teaching in the district for 12 years. He has two wonderful twin children, Theodore and Amaza. He enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his family. Sara Herrmann is a wonderful volunteer for the team. She helped with transportation and meal prep. for the team during our LSSU competition. She is like a team mom, offering words of encouragement and support when we needed them.
